“Tissue engineering of osteochondral implants for joint repair”

 

This project proposal is related to the health area which is one of the targeted research priorities of the Polish-Norwegian Research Programme.

 

The project is aiming to develop treatment methods for difficult and challenging clinical problem connected to degenerative lesions of the articular joints by using multidisciplinary approaches such as tissue engineering (TE) and regenerative medicine to produce transplantable new organs for repair of osteochondral (OC) lesions. To achieve this, the project will employ the latest developments in materials science and nanotechnology, combined with state-of-the-art cell biology and imaging techniques to develop biomimetic osteochondral (OC) TE product for treatment of patients with degenerative lesions of joints.

Production of biomimetic TE construct consisting of different zones corresponding to the cartilage will be possible to make by using combination of 3D cell printing and 3D scaffold fabrication methods. A combined methods involving cell-printing, electrospinning and 3D Solid FreeForm Fabrication will be developed. An advanced numerical modelling, and characterization methods will be also applied in development of novel 3D zonal osteochondral construct with biomimetic structure, controllable porosity and suitable mechanical properties. In vitro and in vivo tests will be performed to assess the developed TE construct.

A final result of project – a novel OC TE construct could be used as:

  • a representative in vitro model of the osteochondral defects
  • a prototype of medical TE product to repair damage joint.
